As an artist, one of the things I hope to put into the world is a greater appreciation for the little things in life. The small details that give the world personality are often what make life feel meaningful to me.
That is part of why I chose to paint a raven, ladybug and a hummingbird. Ravens especially tend to get a bad reputation for being dark or sinister, when in reality they are incredible creatures with remarkable intelligence, memory, and personality. I wanted to bring attention to their beauty and show these animals up close with as much detail as possible.
I placed these small creatures on a book as a reminder of what we could lose. If we continue to pollute and damage their homes, there may come a day when the only way we can see animals like these is through the pages of a book. I placed them on a book as a symbol of hope, which for me, this painting represents my effort to encourage people to notice, appreciate, and protect the natural world around us. Animals deserve safe homes just as much as we do, and I hope my artwork can help remind people of that.
