I have always loved the ocean. I have been fascinated by it ever since I was a child. In this painting, the boy represents myself. As I stare up into the hourglass, I see that it has been shattered. Inside the hourglass is a pirate ship, which represents pollution. Mankind has caused so much destruction to our oceans, and unfortunately, some of that damage is something we may never be able to take back.
In this painting, I am in a dreamlike world where the sea creatures have left the ocean. They have made a new home out in nature, far away from civilization. They have gathered all of the precious jewels and gems they found that were left behind by humans. The fish have tied the gems around the dolphin and the sharks, helping them embrace their new fate. They have accepted mankind's pollution; however, they have decided to flaunt all of the beautiful things they found underwater while leaving behind all of the trash that used to surround them.
I also painted the boy riding on top of a great white shark. I wanted this to symbolize myself overcoming my fears as an artist. Sharks, to me, are so incredibly beautiful, yet they terrify me at the same time. There isn't anything that would scare me more than being in the ocean and seeing a shark swimming underneath me.
That's why I wanted to paint myself on top of the shark, conquering my fears and showing that I will not let anything stand in the way of achieving my goals. I will not be afraid to face the dark.
