The meaning behind this painting comes from a frightening experience I had while hiking in the Dome Land Wilderness several years ago. I wandered off the trail and became completely lost. As the hours passed, I started to realize how dangerous the situation was and how unprepared I was to spend the night alone in the wilderness.
Thankfully, my grandfather found me by carefully retracing my steps. His knowledge of the land and strong sense of direction helped bring me back to safety. He has since passed away, but I wanted to honor the protection and guidance he gave me that day. In this painting, I represented him as an owl wearing a crown of king cardinal feathers, symbolizing a guardian who continues to watch over me and guide me home.
